5 Tips to Staying Healthy this Winter

Sometimes, it gets hard to stay motivated throughout the cold winter months to keep up a healthy regime, whether it is your diet, exercising or anything else! This week, we'd like to share with you some simple ways to help keep you healthy and happy during these chilly months:

1. Stay hydrated - we can't stress this one enough! Try to drink half your body weight in ounces every day. Staying hydrated will help your body functioning at its best.

2. Eat right! Stay away from food that will bog you down like sugary snacks and simple carbs. If you're a big coffee drinker, try substituting green tea for coffee. Green tea is a great source of anti-oxidants and also may help to boost metabolism!

3. Get up and get moving. If it's too cold or wet to exercise outside, join a gym or dust those cobwebs off the elliptical and treadmill and start moving! Take a day and go skiing or snowboarding! We recently saw a suggestion to hide the remote and whenever you want to change channels or adjust the volume, you're forced to get up to do so. Every bit counts!

4. For some people, the days of winter means feeling lethargic, a tendency to oversleep and overeat, a lack of energy, tendency to feeling "blue," and more. Try wearing a bright color such as yellow or red to help boost your energy level and mood. If you're stressed out, try wearing a more calming color like blue or green - you'll be surprised at the effect that color can have on you!

5. Perhaps one of the most important things you can do for yourself is have a positive outlook. In any situation you may find yourself, find something positive to focus on. Problem at work or home? Focus on finding a solution, not expounding on the issue. Feeling like nothing is going right in your day? Make a list of several things that you can be thankful for, even if it's just the air you're breathing or the chair you're sitting on! You may be surprised at your outlook once you've done this.

Just Say NO To Bottled Water

Water Ionizers - A Look At Solid Versus Mesh Plates

In this article, we'll discuss the difference between solid and mesh plates and why the "bigger is better" theory is incorrect.

Let's take a look at solid versus mesh plates in relation to the power delivery inside of the cell. Both types of plates can deliver the necessary current to the water, but why does IonWays use mesh plates when other models use flat, solid plates? Electrical current is just like water flow-it takes the path of least resistance. A flat plate has no way to channel the current delivered. In other words, a flat plate has an inconsistent saturation of electrons (they could be anywhere on a solid, flat plate), often channeled together, and not effectively or evenly dispersed. The result is an inconsistent delivery of power with less efficient and effective ionization results.

Using the mesh plates, we create a reliable grid on which the electrons can travel in predictable directions, effectively distributing the power in a consistent pattern. The result is a consistent running power, evenly saturating the plate, and increasing the amount of surface area receiving the electrical current used to create the alteration in your water. When a garden is tilled into rows and irrigated, the water is channeled directly to the roots, right where it's needed the most! Mesh plate technology is just like that-power is channeled and delivered right where it's needed the most.

In summary, bigger plates use more watts and amps, but don't have the available voltage to deliver it efficiently and, because the plate size is so much bigger, it adds over four times the resistance. Larger plates require a faster flow of electrons but operate with less predictability and efficiency. This actually creates more stress on the plating, causing rapid degradation over time. Now you can see that, in truth, bigger is not better! History has shown that when technology advances, it results in smaller, more powerful devices. Why would ionizers be any different?

Alkaline Water Snake Oil or Not?

Dear IonWays Friends and Associates,

It was with much interest, disbelief, and disappointment that we read the article and watched the video recently published by Joseph Mercola, M.D., who warned the public against alkaline, ionized water. We read with interest because of the torrent of e-mails we received from countless, upset people who felt betrayed by Dr. Mercola. We read with disbelief as Dr. Mercola offered numerous unsupported and poorly researched opinions, made many misstatements, and contradicted much of his own writing - past and present. We have noticed that Dr. Mercola's articles have become, over time, increasingly negative and fearful. More and more, his articles seem to sacrifice true research in preference to making a sale or a point.

This "natural health guru," who once sprinkled fresh life over a desert of failed drug-based health options, has appeared to sell out and become the very thing against which he railed.

Plain and simple, Dr. Mercola is a marketing machine... and a questionable one at that. A 2006 BusinessWeek editorial criticized Dr. Mercola's marketing practices as "relying on slick promotion, clever use of information, and scare tactics." [1] The Weston A. Price Foundation stated, "Mercola's official pronouncement is a strange mixture of true statements and illogical sequelae, conflicting reasoning and unexplained omissions." [2]

Since the advent of his "brand," Dr. Mercola has been one of the most outspoken voices against the establishment and questionable efficacy of the double-blind study. Yet now, because it suits him, Dr. Mercola has fallen on his own sword by contradicting the very credo upon which his sales machine was built.

Among his many put-downs on medical research, he recently (on May 22, 2010 - only three and half months ago) wrote a particularly vehement attack.[3] In this article, he states, among other things, that, "Science-based medicine is a ruse," "Published studies are likely to be seriously flawed," "Natural therapies are at a disadvantage in this flawed system," and finally, "If an alternative treatment has not been published in a medical journal it does not mean that it is unsafe or ineffective." Now he calls alkaline, ionized water "snake oil on tap" because, "Scientific justification for these water systems is absent." Which way is it Doctor?

Further, Dr. Mercola sells products on his own website that lack scientific justification. What research does he provide for the efficiency and safety of his tanning bed; especially in light of a recent FDA report that states, "Tanning beds are now shown to cause skin cancer, skin burns, premature skin aging, and eye damage (both short and long-term)."[4] What double blind studies does he have in support of his extensive line of vitamins, minerals, herbal treatments, and plethora of other products? What research does he have to support the "high amount of calcium" he recommends in his Multivitamin Plus, which he claims "supports the skeletal system"?

In the video, Dr. Mercola implores us each to don our "logic" and put "your natural thinking cap on." Does he take us for fools? The video and article contain so many unsupported opinions, poor research, misstatements, and contradictions that it would take a voluminous tome to address them all! Let's examine some facts, some of the fiction he proposes, and straighten out some of his egregious misstatements.

Fact, fiction, or slick marketing? Dr. Mercola plays BOTH sides of the marketing fence - specifically to suit his shifting needs. Dr. Mercola, in his article, praises the cancer research of Robert Gilles, who uses highly acidic compounds to attack cancer cells and concludes, "Scientists who are in the process of developing prototypes for potential new anticancer agents that selectively kill tumor cells by interfering with the regulation of intracellular pH, have found that alkaline treatments do NOT have the desired effect-but strongly acidic treatments do." Thus, Dr. Mercola uses a very pro-acidic treatment as proof of the inefficiency and even danger of using a pro-alkaline approach.

But wait! In another internet article,[5] he praises an alternative method being practiced by Tulio Simoncini, a medical doctor from Italy. Dr. Simoncini injects tumors with highly alkaline sodium bicarbonate to kill the cancer cells. Dr. Mercola stated, "Unfortunately, Dr. Simoncini is yet another brilliant doctor who has been ousted from the medical community due to his revolutionary simple ideas of how to cure profit-making diseases." See footnote [6] for some of Dr. Simoncini's research.

Fact: Dr. Mercola tries to appear as if he has an absolute answer on alkaline water when all he really does is side with the establishment (when it is convenient for him) to make his point and sell his wares. The fact is that the jury is out on the cause of cancer and the effectiveness of treatments.

Fact: Dr. Mercola, in his article, states, "I can assure you that I would never use alkaline water as a regular source of water." Yet, in a popular internet article [7] called Early Death comes from Drinking Distilled Water, Dr. Mercola states, "The ideal water for the human body should be alkaline and this requires the presence of minerals like calcium and magnesium."

Fiction: Dr. Mercola states, "There are very, very few legitimate, scientific studies about the effects of alkaline water on human health."

Fact: There are many university studies on various aspects and effects of alkaline, ionized water on human health. There are approximately 75 years of Russian research, 30 years of Japanese research, and 20 years of Korean research. All three governments have done extensive research. Please see footnote [8] for the list of Japanese research that has, to date, been translated into English. That the studies weren't performed in the U.S. should give Dr. Mercola confidence; since, as he points out himself, the drug companies control much of the medical research done in the U.S. The fact is that Dr. Mercola has done poor research on this subject.

Fiction: Dr. Mercola states, "And if you drink alkaline water all the time, you're going to raise the alkalinity of your stomach, which will buffer your stomach's acidity and impair your ability to digest food as low stomach acid is one of the most common causes of ulcers. This can open the door for parasites in your small intestine, and your protein digestion may suffer."

Fact: Ben Johnson M.D., D.O., N.M.D. states, "I have performed hundreds of gastroscopes. The stomach is normally empty. When you drink water without food the water moves through the stomach in a fairly rapid fashion into the small intestine where it is absorbed, not really affecting the mucous lining of the stomach nor the pH of that mucous. After years of research into the effects from drinking alkaline water, I am yet to see any causal relationship between alkaline water and parasite or digestion issues. In fact, there is a plethora of Asian research that shows the opposite."

Fiction: Dr. Mercola incorrectly states, "If you really want to alkalinize your body, it would seem wise to encourage it with the highest quality water possible, which is obtained from vegetable juice."

Fact: Ben Johnson M.D., D.O., N.M.D. states, "I know Dr. Mercola sells some juicers, so I guess it is good for him. Let's be clear-juice is food. Basic biochemistry shows that the digestive system processes juice and water differently. Juicing is a great way to get nutrients - not H2o. If you want hydration then you need to drink water. I recommend that it be slightly alkaline so that you get the magnesium and potassium ions which are so healthy."

Fiction: Dr. Mercola states that ionizers are sold by making "astonishing health claims" and "unsubstantiated health claims," including that they "cure cancer."

Fact: To date, IonWays has never received any warning from the FDA for its marketing or that of its representatives and has never claimed that ionizers cure cancer.

Fact: Dr. Mercola has received two warning letters from the FDA for marketing nutritional products in a manner which violated the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. [9] [10]

Fiction: Mercola states, "The fact that most water ionizers and alkalizers are being marketed by multi-level marketing (MLM) companies with less than stellar ethics."

Fact: There are 100s of companies in the U.S. selling water ionizers and approximately ten importers. Only three companies sell through MLM. The "ethical" statement borders on libel, but rather than pursue this legally, I personally invite Dr. Mercola to call me directly and find out about how IonWays does business, our ethics (compliance policies), and our charitable giving.

Fiction: The "expert" in his video, Mr. Houston Tomasz, states that the ionizer industry "will not be around for very long."

Fact: Ionized water has been consumed in Japan since the early 1970s without any known contraindications. It has been sold and consumed in the U.S. since approximately 1995. It is estimated that about one in every six households in Japan now use a water ionizer, and one household in eight in Korea.

Fiction: Mr. Tomasz states, "When you [MLM companies] are selling a product that 10 people get a commission on, it's expensive."

Fact: I have run the sales for both MLM and a traditional business selling the Emco Tech product line-up. I would make a personal invitation to Dr. Mercola and challenge him to a "transparent" accounting review - his company and our company with results to be published. If you research, you will see that IonWays sells its industry-leading model for approximately the same price as all the other leading models, dispelling this notion. It is clearly not marked up to the level of the Enagic TM SD501 at $4,000.

Fiction: Dr. Mercola states, "These consumers have merely fallen under the spell of a skilled [MLM] marketer who selectively misused pseudoscientific information, and twisted it around to scare them into buying their product."

Fact: Dr. Mercola is doing a great disservice to the hundreds of thousands of network marketers that dedicate their lives to helping others help themselves. The fact is that Direct Sales is one of the fastest growing segments of the global economy - especially during a downturn. Our Associates represent IonWays and their loyalty and passion is supported by a Compliance Department that makes sure all marketing efforts are compliant. As in any business model, there are sales representatives who will, at times, act out-of-line. When they do, they are appropriately reprimanded.

Neither IonWays nor its Independent Associates misuse the existing science. I have personally presented the science behind our ionizers in front of hundreds of medical professionals of all types, and have never had anyone take issue with the statements I made. In the end, we are no more guilty than Dr. Mercola himself for using the available research and theories to support our beliefs.

Most importantly, IonWays does not "scare" its customers-unlike the fear-based tactics employed by some internet marketers. IonWays' approach is to give out our product FOR FREE to allow the customer to make up his own mind. I invite the good doctor to come join one of our presentations and see for himself.

Fact: The "expert" in the video, Mr. Houston Tomasz, is a V.P. for Sun Water Systems, Inc. (http://www.aquasana.com), which is a major player in the water filtration products industry. Dr. Mercola did not offer any certifications or credentials held by Mr. Tomasz that would qualify him as an "expert." Certainly not an unbiased one.

Fiction: Dr. Mercola states that, "Water ionizers are NOT filters." Both he and Mr. Tomasz make similar statements in the video, including much discussion about lack or misuse of certifications.

One such example here in the US is the water from Trinity Springs in Paradise, Idaho. It is well documented that Trinity Water exits the ground at pH 9.4 to 9.6 with a -150mv ORP. Fact: Dr. Mercola lauds Dr. Masaru Emoto's work on water crystals and states, "The healing water sources formed beautiful and complex crystalline geometries."

Fact: Dr. Mercola states, "In the near future, I [Dr. Mercola] will post a comprehensive review of water filters." Dr. Mercola already sells a competing water filtering system.[12]

These iterations of fact or fiction cover only a small portion of egregious statements. As off-base as the article was, we are even more surprised that Dr. Mercola allowed the video to be published. In the end, his expert makes statements in the video that actually support the cornerstone principles behind alkaline ionized water. Mr. Tomasz states, "I personally believe alkaline is better, I like a pH above 7," and, "Alkaline water is optimal because by definition you cannot have free radicals in an alkaline environment" ...yet they talk in the video and the article about ionizer salespeople confusing the customer!

So who is the real Dr. Mercola? You be the judge. In the May 2006 BusinessWeek editorial referenced above, columnist David Gumpert opined: "Mercola gives the lie to the notion that holistic practitioners tend to be so absorbed in treating patients that they aren't effective businesspeople. While Mercola on his site seeks to identify with this image by distinguishing himself from 'all the greed-motivated hype out there in health-care land,' he is a master promoter, using every trick of traditional and Internet direct marketing to grow his business. He is selling health-care products and services, and is calling upon an unfortunate tradition made famous by the old-time, snake oil salesmen of the 1800s."

It's our bet that Dr. Mercola's recently published article and video warning against alkaline, ionized water were nothing more than "slick promotion" as BusinessWeek pointed out. We believe his forthcoming review will undoubtedly and inevitably steer you toward a specific water product or products. Then, in conjunction with these two publications, Dr. Mercola will have positioned himself to come across as the "unbiased voice of reason" the "dispeller of pseudo-science" and the "provider of unbiased truth." The reality will be that (just as he does with the other 100+ products he sells or otherwise endorses) he is pulling the strings to steer many trusting readers to products for which he will receive some form of compensation, either directly or behind the scenes. He gets it both ways.

I personally find Dr. Mercola's approach sad and disheartening. We invite anyone who reads this article to talk with those who have personally consumed and benefitted from alkaline ionized water - many for upwards of 10 or 15 years. Better yet, we invite you to try it for yourself and see - for free. We ask that you let your body be the final judge. It is not by marketing that we will change the state of health in the U.S. It will be through a grass roots movement of people who empirically know alkaline, ionized water works. Regardless of what Dr. Joe Mercola says.

Bigger Is Not Always Better

Our competition has been perpetrating the myth that if an ionizer has larger plates and a greater number of them, its performance will be better. An understanding of basic electrical principles, electrode technology, and actual certified independent laboratory testing shows the truth: less is more when less is more efficient. After all, the definition of efficiency is useful work per quantity of energy.

Electrical Principles Made Easy

Electricity is a mystery to some people. However, it's actually quite easy to understand, especially if you think in terms that already make sense to you. Let's use a simple analogy: water flow as it relates to a garden. Electricity is little more than the flow of electrons in a circuit. In our analogy, electricity is like the water flowing from your garden hose. Of course, there is a difference between watering your garden effectively and efficiently and watering it with a fire hose - more isn't always better and this is true with ionizers.

First, let's look at the three basic components that measure electricity: volts, amps, and watts.

Volts measure the force (pressure) of electrons flowing through a circuit. In our garden, volts would be water pressure or the force of water coming througth the nozzle of your hose. Water pressure is measured in pounds per square inch, better known as PSI. Does it blast out (high pressure) or trickle out (low pressure)?

Amps are the measurement of how fast the electrons flow through a circuit. In our garden, amps would be the flow rate or how fast the water is flowing through the hose. The flow rate is measured in gallons per minute, or GPM. If we have more pressure (volts), we have a faster water flow (amps).

Watts measure the amount of electrical power (electrons) that is used over time. In our garden, this amount is what your water meter measures between readings - how many total gallons or volume of water you run through the system, but not how well it is being used.

In review, volts are the force of the water, amps are how fast the water flows, and watts are how much water is used. A crucial distinction to make is that these measurements (by themselves) do not show efficiency. When watering a garden, you can be more effective by using a nozzle. A nozzle can restrict the flow and increase the pressure and flow rate, changing efficiency. In electricity a transformer changes the properties of electrical flow, giving it the same affect on electricity that a nozzle has on water flow.

It is a fact that if we had to water both a large and small garden with the same one-inch hose and the same amount of water, it would be much harder to water a larger garden effectively.

All ionizers in North America operate on the same input voltage (PSI) at 120 VAC. This can be compared with a garden's water hose - everyone starts with the same water pressure (voltage) coming out of the spigot (the power outlet in the wall).
The IonWays Athena employs five plates that total 110 square inches. Our competitor uses seven plates that total 466 square inches. In our analogy, the IonWays garden is approximately 110 squares and our competitor's garden is 466 squares. We each have the same pressure (120 volts). To the untrained eye, it would seem as though they've got us beat simply because their number is greater. But not so fast! Simple math will show us the efficiency of both and the truth that bigger is not better:

IonWays Athena: 110 sq in / 120v = .916"2 per volt. This reveals that each of the 120 volts is applied to .916 sq inches of plate, or more than 1 available volt per 1 square inch. The Athena uses 110 watts at peak operating power. In relation to square area, this would be 110w / 110sq inches or 1 watt per square inch. Each of these simple equations show an efficient saturation in your garden and an effective use of the available water - especially when compared to our "bigger is better" competitor below.

Enagic SD-501: 466 sq in /120v = 3.88"2 per volt. This shows us that that each of the 120 volts is applied to 3.88 sq inches of plate, or about ¼ the voltage per square inch when compared to the Athena. The SD-501 uses 230 watts at peak power which would be 230w / 466sq inches or .49 watts per square inch. This means that our competitor is consuming almost twice the amount of power and delivering a quarter of the energy! After all, watts are the measurement of how much power it takes to deliver the same amount of electrons. Each of these equations shows a much less effective saturation rate in your garden and a dramatic decrease in the use of available water (or electrical current).

When comparing the voltage in relation to plate size, the advantage of using smaller, more efficient plates is clearly seen. There's more power in greater concentration where it's needed with less resistance, which creates a deeper alteration to the water. This is precisely why the Athena outperforms our competitor in independent laboratory testing.

Now let's look at how amps effect ionization. Remember, amps are the speed at which electrons flow through a circuit, or how fast water flows through a garden hose. The Athena operates at 1 amp; the SD-501 operates at 2 amps. The competition uses about twice the amperage, but as shown in the table above, their 2 amps have to saturate about four times the amount of surface area as in the Athena. In addition, there's a problem with moving electrical current too fast in that it when it meets resistance (the plate), it cangenerate heat. This generated heat cancause a loss of power, which can, over time, stress the surface of the plates. This can cause rapid degradation, decreasing the plates' ability to create the alteration we're after. Running a slower 1 amp current allows the Athena use its power in a much more consistent and efficient way. We saturate the electrodes with clean-running, consistent, usable power which is distributed evenly over the plate. This is one reason why Ionways ionizers consistently beats its competitors when run side-by-side without the use of caustic sodium enhancers. We've all seen how slowing the flow on an ionizer increases its alkaline production; in slowing the electrical current we also get a greater alteration. This would be like turning the hose to our sprinkler up too fast; we would over shoot our garden and not be able to saturate it as efficiently.

When installing an IonWays ionizer in one of today's modern kitchens, one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome is the pull-out, spray-style faucet. These newer model faucets are so convenient that I'm sure they'll be around for a good long time. With a little know-how and a few different options, an ionizer can be installed in your kitchen no matter what type of faucet you have-even the difficult pull-out, spray-style...

The first option (and my personal favorite) is to install a connection directly to the cold water line. There are several different adapters and fittings to make the connection and these are widely available at most hardware stores. This option leaves the spray attachment intact and operational. It also frees an expensive and nice-looking faucet from a diverter valve hanging off its side. This option requires that you find a clear path to the ionizer from under the counter top. I have drilled a ¼" hole through my counter where the back splash meets the top-it's so small that you have to look hard to even notice it. You could even run the hose right up next to your soap dispenser-where there's a will, there's a way!

Also available with the Athena or Isis is the option of installing an under sink kit. All you'll need is a 1½" hole drilled through the sink or counter top. Standard plumbing fixtures use the same size hole, making it easy to slip the kit's faucet right in through a pre-drilled soap dispenser or accessory hole.

If you're planning to hook your ionizer to your pull-out, spray-style faucet with a diverter, you'll need a special adapter because the aerator is recessed into the faucet and needs an added extension to make a diverter valve fit. In order to find this adapter, it's important that you know exactly what to call it, "15/16, 27 thread male adapter for speakman style." Because the part can be difficult to find and is not always available at your local hardware store, you may need to order it through the Internet. Using the exact words noted above, you can do a Google search and find several places selling the adapter at an average cost of four dollars.

Eczema (atopic)

This fact sheet is for people, or parents of children, who have atopic eczema.

Eczema, also known as dermatitis, describes a group of skin conditions where the skin is irritated or inflamed. There are many different types of eczema - the most common is atopic eczema (also called endogenous eczema). About 1 in 6 children get atopic eczema in the UK, but most grow out of it by their teens. However for some people, it can continue into adulthood.

What is eczema?

There are various types of eczema, with slightly different causes and symptoms. This factsheet will focus on atopic eczema but the other types are described below.

Allergic contact eczema

Also called exogenous eczema, allergic contact eczema develops when substances or chemicals irritate the skin and cause an allergic reaction. The rash usually starts at the site of contact with the substance, but may then spread to other areas.

Irritant contact eczema

Irritant contact eczema is similar to allergic contact eczema and is caused by frequent contact with everyday substances such as detergents in toiletries or cleaning products.

Seborrhoeic eczema

Seborrhoeic eczema is common in babies under one, although adults can get it too. The rash is greasy and it usually starts on the scalp (this is sometimes called cradle cap in babies) and can then spread to other areas. It usually clears up in babies by the time they are one but can go on for a number of years in adults.

Varicose eczema

Varicose eczema (also known as gravitational or stasis eczema) is found in older people. It occurs on the lower legs and is associated with varicose veins and poor circulation.

Discoid eczema

Discoid eczema affects the arms and legs. It occurs in round scaly patches and is incredibly itchy. Discoid eczema is most common in middle-aged men.

Eczema symptoms

The symptoms of eczema vary depending on the type. Atopic eczema symptoms include:

red skin
dry skin
itchy skin
small water blisters on the skin, particularly on the hands and feet - or the skin can become wet and weepy if it gets infected
scaly areas of skin in places that are scratched frequently - this is known as lichenification

Atopic eczema usually affects the backs of the knees and the front of the elbows as well as the chest, face and neck.

Causes

You cannot catch eczema. It does not spread from one person to another.

The exact cause of atopic eczema isn't fully understood at present. People do have a genetic, or inherited, tendency to develop the condition however. Atopy means a family tendency to a variety of allergic conditions, including asthma, hay fever and eczema.

Sometimes, the symptoms "flare up" for no obvious reason. But you may notice certain triggers that set off your, or your child's, eczema including:

chemicals, detergents, soap or shampoo
inhaled irritants such as pollen or house dust mites
infections with bacteria or viruses
certain foods in people that have food allergies, although this is quite rare
dry skin
being "run down", if you are ill with a cold, for example
changes in hormone levels - eczema can be worse in women before their monthly period
stress

Diagnosis

Your GP will ask you about your symptoms and examine your, or your child's, skin. Y

our doctor may also rub a sterile cotton bud on the skin to check for infections.

Most people with atopic eczema are treated by their GP but you may be referred to a specialist.

Treatment

Atopic eczema cannot be cured. Treatments aim to control the symptoms.

Home treatment

There are a number of over-the-counter remedies available from pharmacies to treat eczema including those below. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice on which treatment to use.

Emollients are moisturisers which soothe, smooth and add water to (hydrate) the skin. They are the most common treatment and should be used every day even if you do not have eczema symptoms. Examples include aqueous cream and E45 cream. You can apply emollients directly to your skin as lotions, creams or ointments. A good time to apply them is just after a bath, while your skin is still slightly moist. Oils or washes are also available, which you can use in the shower or add to a bath.
Mild steroid creams, such as hydrocortisone (eg Dermacort or Lanacort) can calm flare-ups of eczema by suppressing your body's inflammatory response. You should ask the pharmacist's advice or see your GP before using any steroid cream. The stronger steroids are only available on prescription (see below). You should continue to use emollients at the same time as steroid creams.

Prescription drug treatments

If emollients and mild steroids don't treat your condition, there are a range of other treatment options that your doctor can prescribe.

Stronger steroid creams, such as betamethasone (eg Betnovate) are available on prescription. You should apply them sparingly and use the mildest cream that works as steroids may have side-effects. If you use a strong steroid for too long or on a delicate area of skin such as the face and armpits, it can thin the skin. This can make the skin more fragile leading to blemishes, wrinkles or visible small blood vessels. You should see your doctor for regular check-ups to prevent this happening and follow their advice or that of a pharmacist or nurse.
Oral steroids, such as prednisolone, are available as tablets to treat severe eczema. They are only used for short periods of time (typically a course of up to a week).
Immunosuppressant tablets, such as azathioprine or ciclosporin, are prescribed for severe eczema. They can have severe side-effects so you should not take them for long periods - ask your doctor for more information.
Topical immunosuppressants are creams or lotions that you apply to your skin to reduce inflammation. They may be prescribed to you if other treatments have not worked or you cannot use them due to side-effects. Examples include tacrolimus (Protopic) and pimecrolimus (Elidel). These are new treatments that do not contain steroids so they may have less side-effects but the long-term safety has not been evaluated.
Antibiotics, such as flucloxacillin or erythromycin, will be prescribed if your, or your child's skin is infected.
Antihistamine tablets can help people with eczema to sleep, but they are unlikely to ease itching.

Hospital treatment

If your, or your child's, eczema is severe you may need hospital treatment. This will remove you from the environment that may be triggering your symptoms and the hospital staff will ensure that you are taking your treatments correctly.
If your, or your child's, skin is infected with a herpes simplex infection, antiviral treatment will be given to you in hospital.
For some people with eczema, ultra violet light treatment is helpful. This is usually given in hospital by a specialist.

Complementary treatments

Some people find that complementary treatments such as herbal creams and homeopathy are helpful, although there is no firm scientific evidence for this.

Chinese herbal medicines may also help, but the active ingredients are poorly understood. Also, information about the quality and safety of the preparations is hard to obtain and side-effects such as liver damage have been reported.

If you use additional creams on your skin, you should use reputable brands and tell your doctor about these as well as other treatments you are taking.

Eczema management

Drug treatments are only part of the treatment for eczema. Eczema also needs to be managed by dealing with the things that make it worse.

Identifying and avoiding the things that trigger your, or your child's, eczema are an essential part of your overall treatment plan. Keeping a diary to record anything that triggers eczema can help you to discover a pattern.

If your, or your child's, eczema is triggered by certain foods you should ask your doctor for advice on how to deal with this. Excluding foods may not have any effect and can lead to a deficiency of essential nutrients, calcium or protein. It should only be considered for children under the supervision of a doctor or dietitian.

With good management and appropriate treatment, most people are able to control their atopic eczema.

Most of those reading this article know about alkaline water and its remarkable benefits to human health. And, when put in a position to do so, most of us can explain the benefits of alkalinity and the harmful effects of acidity inside the body. However, looking at the pH scale can present a challenge when it comes to accurately measuring pH and our ability to interpret those findings. This week, let's take a look at the pH scale and the meaning of the information it presents to us.

Let's begin with three definitions: Alkalinity is the measurement of a substance's ability to neutralize acid; acidity is the ability of a substance to neutralize a base (or alkalinity) and pH is the concentration of hydrogen in a solution which determines whether that solution is acidic or alkaline.

pH literally means potential hydrogen. When a solution has a lot of hydrogen, it's acidic. When a solution has little hydrogen, it's alkaline. The lack of hydrogen creates a high pH value because "potential" is the measurement of how much more hydrogen can fit into a solution until it's at its maximum concentration. Hydrogen is very acidic. The pH value shows us the intensity levels of an acidic or alkaline condition of a solution and is measured on the pH scale.

The pH scale ranges in numbers from 1 to 14. A pH reading of one shows the most extreme measurement of acidity. A reading of seven on the pH scale is exactly neutral, and a reading of fourteen is extremely alkaline. The pH scale is logarithmic, meaning that it is measured in tenfold increments. A shift from 7 to 6 is ten times more acidic, a shift from 7 to 8 is ten times more alkaline. A shift from 7 to 9 is one hundred times more alkaline, from 7 to 10 one thousand times, and so forth. Now you can see the difference between drinking a soda pop with a pH of 3 as compared to drinking a glass of alkaline water with a pH of 9 - a huge difference, wouldn't you agree?

Tech Talk - Filter Replacements

One of the more common calls our Technical Services Department receives starts something like: "I think I was sent the wrong filter!"

IonWays ionizers are sent with standard blue-gray colored filters.These are much different from the New and Improved Sediment filter and BioStone Plus replacement filters, which are an environmentally friendly, unpigmented filter, and a tad bit bigger. We've made a lot of improvements to these filters, especially the Biostone Plus, which is now designed not only for the reduction of chlorine and disinfectant chemicals, but also for chloramines and heavy metals!

Installing these filters is quite a simple process:

Step One: Open appropriate filter door. Filter 1 (left side)-Sediment Filter, Filter 2(right side)-Biostone Filter.

Step Two: Press straight down on top of the filter to release it from the top housing. Once it's clear, you can lean the filter out and away from the machine to remove.

Step Three:
Athena/Delphi replacement: Remove filter cup from ionizer (sometimes the cup will come out attached to the filter). Install the new filter along with the enclosed, modified filter stand by inserting into ionizer. For easy installation, we recommend you insert the modified filter stand into the bottom of the filter first and then insert the entire filter unit into your ionizer. Note: The filter stand is only necessary for ionizers sold before August 2009.

Isis replacement: Install the new filter by inserting into ionizer. Note: The Isis does not require the modified filter stand for installation, so it should be removed from the filter prior to installation. Once the filter is placed, spin/rotate it a few times in each direction to ensure a good seal on the O-rings.

Step Five: Turn on water and allow it to flow through the ionizer for a couple of minutes. This will purge out any carbon dust or mineral particles commonly found in all new filters. This step is recommended for all new filters.

How Does An Alkaline Water Ionizer Work?

The functions of a Alkaline Water Ionizer, although involving advanced computer technology and circuitry, is actually quite easy to explain. It can most simply be described as a two-stage operation.

Stage One: Filtering
It’s an accepted fact that our tap water, filled with industrial waste and discarded pharmaceuticals, requires intense filtering for optimum health. It’s also a fact that many people aren’t even aware of exactly what different types of water filters can and can’t remove. So, the first part of any good water treatment involves the filtering of the incoming water supply.

The first thing a water ionizer does to your input tap water is filter it using a combination of bacteriological and particulate control incorporating silver-activated charcoal, the most accepted and proven method on the market. Your water passes through an ultra-fine Biostone Filter which removes the following:

Bacteria
Inorganic Chemicals
Lead
Organic Chemicals
Particulate
Pesticides
Trihalomethanes
Volatile Organic chemicals
Detergents
Asbestos
Viruses
Pollens

What it DOESN’T filter out is soluble minerals. This means that the ionizer, unlike distillers or reverse osmosis devices, will leave in all of the healthy minerals your body requires to function properly. This is the way we’ve always had our water, all the way back to the point when we emerged from the sea.

So after the water filter has done its job, you now have clean mineralized water ready for ionizing. Minerals that cannot dissolve in water, do not get through the Biostone water filter.

About The Incoming Water
There are many devices that claim the above qualities, and to the beginner’s eyes they might all seem similar. Some use magnets, some magnetic rock, some ceramics.

However there is a very clear way to demonstrate the effectiveness of the water ionizers. For this we use the two measurements of pH (acid/alkaline) and Oxidation/Reduction Potential.

When your tap water arrives at your home, it will usually be a little over neutral in pH ~ around 7.5.

It will, however, be robbed of its electrical negative charge and will almost always have a ‘positive’ ORP . This means it has no antioxidant abilities and cannot assist your body in the fight against oxygen free radicals. On the contrary, it actually robs you of energy as you drink it.

The measurement of this positive or negative charge is expressed in millivolts, so an ORP reading on our ORP meter of tap water will most likely show around +350 millivolts. After it has been through Ionizing Water filters it will most likely show anything from -150 to -650mv (depending on the amount of soluble minerals in the water and on the original pH of the water).

Here’s where it gets a little tricky. Some device vendors claim antioxidant effect because their water units reduce the positive charge (+350mv). What they don’t tell you is that they don’t reduce it enough to turn it negative. ONLY when your water shows a negative ORP (less than zero) is it antioxidant capable. Claims to the contrary are like saying “Well, your car is still muddy, but look how well we partially cleaned it!”

It’s a similar situation with alkalinity. As we already mentioned, your water is already arriving at your sink with a mild alkalinity. That’s because local authorities ‘doctor’ it with lime to keep it the alkaline side of acid, for two reasons;

They are bound by law to do so
Acid (less than pH 7) water is a willing host for microorganisms, bacteria and viruses.

Scientists at Shiga university in Japan have conducted long term research into optimum alkalinity of drinking water for health, and have determined it to be from pH 8 to 9.5. Our own research has confirmed that no other devices we know of are capable of delivering a precise pH with a range all the way from neutral up to pH 10. If you are considering other devices please keep these two important facts in mind.

You need a negative charge in your drinking water for it to be at all antioxidant.
You need the ability to adjust pH for each individual user or family member.

The success of Ionizing water filters worldwide is due primarily to the marriage of technology and age-old water principles in the form of computerized individual pH and ORP capabilities. The precision of this onboard computerized measurement cannot be duplicated in systems without electricity, no matter what they say.

Stage Two: Ionizing
Your water now enters the ionization chamber. Here it has a very specific low voltage electric current passed through it, which causes the soluble minerals in it to be attracted to either a positive ‘pole’ or a negative ‘pole’ depending on their own valiancy, or electrical energy signature. When this happens, the water separates into alkaline and acid streams. We drink the alkaline water and we use the acid water externally, for skin, healing, plants and disinfecting.

This function is under the watchful eye of the ‘brains’ of the water ionizer, a solid state onboard computer (MICOM) that determines the exact voltage for each user, chosen by a simple press of a button.

The real beauty of this process is the fact that the minerals in the water that flow out with the alkaline water are all beneficial, while the minerals that flow out with the acid water are, in the main, not. Thus, you drink purified, beneficially mineralized alkaline water. Minerals and mineral compounds such as fluoride, flow out in the acid water.

At the same time, the alkaline water undergoes a profound change. From ordinary H20 it becomes OH- . This means it becomes a powerful antioxidant formula at an atomic level. It also means that it changes the way its molecules group together. Instead of ‘clumping’ in large groups of 12 molecules, it gathers in much smaller (around half the size) groups. This is why people refer to the experience of drinking from water ionizers as effortless, or ’silken’.

This change of molecular form also means, according to Dr. Hayashi, of the Japanese Water Institute, that it gains the ability to penetrate tissue and cell walls far more easily. This is why many people experience detoxification effects in the first few weeks of drinking the water, as it infiltrates areas that have not been reachable with ordinary H2O. This is what is called ‘Microclustered‘ water.

If in doubt, ask for a test of your water ionizer. This will demonstrate to you whether you are getting what you pay for.

Remember, it’s not about how good your water filter is or how long it will last. It’s about how long YOU want to last and how good YOUR life will be!

Fake Water Ionizer Comparison Sites - Beware!

MANIPULATING TEST RESULTS – WHILE APPEARING LEGIT!

There is some tricky business going on today on the internet. Testing ionizer performance can easily be manipulated, even if they go to great lengths to tell you how they are not. There are basically three ways to manipulate test results: 1) control the performance variables, 2) Doctor the test vessels, 3) play tricks with the camera. BUYER BEWARE of performance tests which carry no certification. You should only trust test results obtained by a third party credible source that is willing to certify the test results.Let’s look at each of the ways tests can appear to be legitimate but are dishonest and manipulated:

Testing where you cannot see the voltage settings on the ionizers: This would be the easiest trick they can play. The scenario is easy: the person performing the test tells you the ionizer is on the highest setting, but the camera does not bother to zoom in on the control panel of the ionizer so you can see it. As you view a performance video pay attention to:

· The close up shots of the control panel of each ionizer.

· Look to ensure the highest setting is selected and that you can actually see this.

Manipulating Flow Rates: You can always achieve higher pH and ORP readings with reduced flow rates. Simply put, speed up flow rate, you get less performance; slow it down and you’ll get more performance. As you view a performance video pay attention to:

· The individual flow rates on each ionizer – can you see them individually and close up?

· Are all the ionizers running at the same time? If so be suspicious – it would be easy to control flow using an in-line valve. You could slow flow to one ionizer to increase results and speed up flow on another ionizer to decrease results.

Additives: Some units have mineral ports. Additives can be introduced to increase or decrease performance.

· White vinegar can be added to the port of an ionizer to decrease performance

· Mineral additives can be introduced to increase performance

· Again, who did the test? Are they credible?

In the end ask who was controlling the settings? A technician from an Independent EPA Certified Analytical Lab would certainly be the most trustworthy.

DOCTORING TEST VESSELS – Even if they state that the test vessels are brand new. Here a few ways in which they can appear brand new but completely skew results:

· Ammonia or bleach – both liquids are extremely powerful alkaline substances. Both also happen to be clear liquids. Here is a simple an powerful way in which to alter results: Take what appears to be a new cup, swirl some bleach or ammonia in it. Pour it out. Allow to dry. Now your vessel appears brand new – but will powerfully alter the results. Add water and you will have a high pH result.

· White vinegar or muriatic acid – both liquids are extremely powerful acidic substances. Both are also clear liquids. Test results can be doctored to lower results using the same method but substituting an acidic. Add water and you will have a lower pH result.

PLAYING TRICKS WITH THE CAMERA OR NARRATIVE– this form of manipulation is easiest to understand. Through editing you can start or stop a film easily creating results that are falsified. Magic can fool your naked eye; imagine what type of magic can be crafted using a camera! Through deft narrative you can be hypnotized into thinking that a test appears to be performed honestly. This is also the easiest to remove doubt from. Believe only facts that can be certified. As you view a performance video ask:

· Who is making the rating or video? Who actually performed the tests?

· Is the person testing (and standing behind the results) credible? Can they be believed?

· Would you prefer to believe a technician from an Independent EPA Certified Analytical Lab would certainly be the most trustworthy.

Lastly lets look at the motivation. Most of the current comparison sites have top ranking in the “Sponsored Links” section on GoogleTM. Why on earth would an objective review site pay GoogleTM to get to the top billing in the search engine rankings? Could it be they stand to profit? The only criteria they offer you are their homegrown video “performance tests” which attempt to appear unbiased and objective. Again, ask the salient questions. In the end you will find it is a slick, yet essentially dishonest approach to offering a comparison. It is designed to direct you to their specific brand, which of course they rank the highest. Additionally, they focus only on pH and ORP and leave out some other crucial performance considerations. In short, when you look past a clean-cut image and a smooth articulate delivery, where are the facts that you can trust?

WHAT YOU SHOULD BELIEVE – It is especially important when considering performance testing that you trust only facts. There are more and more “comparisons” showing up on the Internet lately; how can you know which to believe? The following criteria will help you distinguish what is truly factual from that which appears to be, but in reality is not.

QUESTIONS TO ASK TO DETERMINE A GOOD TEST

Is the Test Independent, Third Party? You will want to know the party performing the test has no motivation for a specific outcome. Ideally a test would be performed by a company with absolutely no business ties to any brand. There are tests on the Internet that appear to be objective but in reality are not. In a few short minutes of internet searching, we found an interesting website depicting the ties of one comparison site to a specific brand. A good litmus test to apply is does the entity performing the test make income from the sale of ionizers? Can you verify this?

Is the Test Scientific? Look for good solid scientific testing using:

o Top quality instruments. Measuring pH is relatively common (example: pool and fish tank maintenance) and the equipment to do it is fairly accurate and readily available. Measuring ORP is another story entirely. ORP is expressed in millivolts (1/1000 of a single volt) and measures extremely slight, and highly variable differences in the electrical properties of water. Instruments that measure ORP range in price from $100 for a handheld “tester” to over $3,000 for more sophisticated laboratory equipment. Look for the more sophisticated and expensive laboratory equipment.

o Solid lab protocols and flawless execution. There are many factors which can be manipulated easily in a video. You will want verify that all possible variables that could affect the outcome of testing were strictly controlled such as settings, flow rates, age of the ionizer

Are the Results Certified? You want to see results certified by a credible authority, which will stand behind the fact that it is an Independent Third Party that has employed proper scientific protocols. The litmus test here is easy: would the certifying party have anything to lose if they were caught falsifying certified results? An analytical lab with an EPA certification on the line would be a good bet to provide facts that are verifiable and trustworthy. A guy standing in a kitchen would not.

Fish in U.S. Rivers Tainted With Common Medications

Study is part of government strategy to tackle issue

(HealthDay News) -- Fish from five U.S. rivers were found to be tainted with traces of medications and common chemicals, according to a new study from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Baylor University.

The common antihistamine diphenhydramine (Benadryl), an anticonvulsant and two types of antidepressants were among the seven types of pharmaceuticals found in the tissue and livers of fish from waterways in or near Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Orlando, Fla. Each river is considered "effluent-dominated," because they receive large amounts of wastewater discharge from nearby sewage treatment plants.

While federal standards exist for treated wastewater, they do not address pharmaceuticals or most personal care products, and little is known about the effects they have on the environment and wildlife. This study is part of a federal strategy to address the issue.

Previous research has concluded that behavior vital for fish survival, such as mating and fighting, can be affected if too much antidepressant residue collects in their systems.

While other studies have found pharmaceuticals and personal care products in wild river fish, this is the first time multiple compounds have been found in fish from several different locations, co-lead investigator Bryan Brooks, an associate professor of environmental sciences at Baylor, said in a news release issued by the Texas-based university.

The medications and chemicals found from among the 36 tested for were, aside from diphenhydramine:
the cholesterol drug gemfibrozil (Lopid), which researchers say had never before been found in wild fish;
diltiazem (Cardizem), a medication that helps control high blood pressure;
carbamazepine (Tegretol), a drug used for epilepsy and bipolar disorder;
norfluoxetine, an active ingredient in the antidepressant fluoxetine (Prozac);
the antidepressant sertraline (Zoloft);
galaxolide and tonalide, common odor-enhancing ingredients in soap and other hygiene products.

Galaxolide and tonalide were found in the highest concentrations in the fish tissue, while the others were more concentrated in the liver, which processes foreign substances that enter the body.

The study was presented Wednesday at the American Chemical Society annual meeting in Salt Lake City, while the results also are to be published in a special online edition of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.

Since November, Jennifer’s been selling skin care products for Arbonne International.

The company relies on a network of sales consultants who recruit other people to sell the product as well.

The more people a sales consultant recruits, the bigger her potential earnings are.

It might sound like a pyramid scheme to some, but marketing experts say it’s not.

“These are legitimate businesses, though you want to make sure you’re working for a good business, always,” Dr. Betsy Holloway of Samford University’s Brock School of Business said.

It’s called “network marketing” or “multi-level marketing” (MLM) and it’s been around for decades.

AP IMPACT: Tons of released drugs taint US water

- U.S. manufacturers, including major drugmakers, have legally released at least 271 million pounds of pharmaceuticals into waterways that often provide drinking water — contamination the federal government has consistently overlooked, according to an Associated Press investigation.

Hundreds of active pharmaceutical ingredients are used in a variety of manufacturing, including drugmaking: For example, lithium is used to make ceramics and treat bipolar disorder; nitroglycerin is a heart drug and also used in explosives; copper shows up in everything from pipes to contraceptives.

Federal and industry officials say they don't know the extent to which pharmaceuticals are released by U.S. manufacturers because no one tracks them — as drugs. But a close analysis of 20 years of federal records found that, in fact, the government unintentionally keeps data on a few, allowing a glimpse of the pharmaceuticals coming from factories.

As part of its ongoing PharmaWater investigation about trace concentrations of pharmaceuticals in drinking water, AP identified 22 compounds that show up on two lists: the EPA monitors them as industrial chemicals that are released into rivers, lakes and other bodies of water under federal pollution laws, while the Food and Drug Administration classifies them as active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The data don't show precisely how much of the 271 million pounds comes from drugmakers versus other manufacturers; also, the figure is a massive undercount because of the limited federal government tracking.

To date, drugmakers have dismissed the suggestion that their manufacturing contributes significantly to what's being found in water. Federal drug and water regulators agree.

But some researchers say the lack of required testing amounts to a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy about whether drugmakers are contributing to water pollution.

"It doesn't pass the straight-face test to say pharmaceutical manufacturers are not emitting any of the compounds they're creating," said Kyla Bennett, who spent 10 years as an EPA enforcement officer before becoming an ecologist and environmental attorney.

Pilot studies in the U.S. and abroad are now confirming those doubts.

Last year, the AP reported that trace amounts of a wide range of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in American drinking water supplies. Including recent findings in Dallas, Cleveland and Maryland's Prince George's and Montgomery counties, pharmaceuticals have been detected in the drinking water of at least 51 million Americans.

Most cities and water providers still do not test. Some scientists say that wherever researchers look, they will find pharma-tainted water.

Consumers are considered the biggest contributors to the contamination. We consume drugs, then excrete what our bodies don't absorb. Other times, we flush unused drugs down toilets. The AP also found that an estimated 250 million pounds of pharmaceuticals and contaminated packaging are thrown away each year by hospitals and long-term care facilities.

Researchers have found that even extremely diluted concentrations of drugs harm fish, frogs and other aquatic species. Also, researchers report that human cells fail to grow normally in the laboratory when exposed to trace concentrations of certain drugs. Some scientists say they are increasingly concerned that the consumption of combinations of many drugs, even in small amounts, could harm humans over decades.

Utilities say the water is safe. Scientists, doctors and the EPA say there are no confirmed human risks associated with consuming minute concentrations of drugs. But those experts also agree that dangers cannot be ruled out, especially given the emerging research.

Two common industrial chemicals that are also pharmaceuticals — the antiseptics phenol and hydrogen peroxide — account for 92 percent of the 271 million pounds identified as coming from drugmakers and other manufacturers. Both can be toxic and both are considered to be ubiquitous in the environment.

However, the list of 22 includes other troubling releases of chemicals that can be used to make drugs and other products: 8 million pounds of the skin bleaching cream hydroquinone, 3 million pounds of nicotine compounds that can be used in quit-smoking patches, 10,000 pounds of the antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride. Others include treatments for head lice and worms.

Residues are often released into the environment when manufacturing equipment is cleaned.

A small fraction of pharmaceuticals also leach out of landfills where they are dumped. Pharmaceuticals released onto land include the chemo agent fluorouracil, the epilepsy medicine phenytoin and the sedative pentobarbital sodium. The overall amount may be considerable, given the volume of what has been buried — 572 million pounds of the 22 monitored drugs since 1988.

In one case, government data shows that in Columbus, Ohio, pharmaceutical maker Boehringer Ingelheim Roxane Inc. discharged an estimated 2,285 pounds of lithium carbonate — which is considered slightly toxic to aquatic invertebrates and freshwater fish — to a local wastewater treatment plant between 1995 and 2006. Company spokeswoman Marybeth C. McGuire said the pharmaceutical plant, which uses lithium to make drugs for bipolar disorder, has violated no laws or regulations. McGuire said all the lithium discharged, an annual average of 190 pounds, was lost when residues stuck to mixing equipment were washed down the drain.

Pharmaceutical company officials point out that active ingredients represent profits, so there's a huge incentive not to let any escape. They also say extremely strict manufacturing regulations — albeit aimed at other chemicals — help prevent leakage, and that whatever traces may get away are handled by onsite wastewater treatment.

"Manufacturers have to be in compliance with all relevant environmental laws," said Alan Goldhammer, a scientist and vice president at the industry trade group Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

Goldhammer conceded some drug residues could be released in wastewater, but stressed "it would not cause any environmental issues because it was not a toxic substance at the level that it was being released at."

Several big drugmakers were asked this simple question: Have you tested wastewater from your plants to find out whether any active pharmaceuticals are escaping, and if so what have you found?

No drugmaker answered directly.

"Based on research that we have reviewed from the past 20 years, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities are not a significant source of pharmaceuticals that contribute to environmental risk," GlaxoSmithKline said in a statement.

AstraZeneca spokeswoman Kate Klemas said the company's manufacturing processes "are designed to avoid, or otherwise minimize the loss of product to the environment" and thus "ensure that any residual losses of pharmaceuticals to the environment that do occur are at levels that would be unlikely to pose a threat to human health or the environment."

One major manufacturer, Pfizer Inc., acknowledged that it tested some of its wastewater — but outside the United States.

The company's director of hazard communication and environmental toxicology, Frank Mastrocco, said Pfizer has sampled effluent from some of its foreign drug factories. Without disclosing details, he said the results left Pfizer "confident that the current controls and processes in place at these facilities are adequately protective of human health and the environment."

It's not just the industry that isn't testing.

FDA spokesman Christopher Kelly noted that his agency is not responsible for what comes out on the waste end of drug factories. At the EPA, acting assistant administrator for water Mike Shapiro — whose agency's Web site says pharmaceutical releases from manufacturing are "well defined and controlled" — did not mention factories as a source of pharmaceutical pollution when asked by the AP how drugs get into drinking water.

"Pharmaceuticals get into water in many ways," he said in a written statement. "It's commonly believed the majority come from human and animal excretion. A portion also comes from flushing unused drugs down the toilet or drain; a practice EPA generally discourages."

His position echoes that of a line of federal drug and water regulators as well as drugmakers, who concluded in the 1990s — before highly sensitive tests now used had been developed — that manufacturing is not a meaningful source of pharmaceuticals in the environment.

Pharmaceutical makers typically are excused from having to submit an environmental review for new products, and the FDA has never rejected a drug application based on potential environmental impact. Also at play are pressures not to delay potentially lifesaving drugs. What's more, because the EPA hasn't concluded at what level, if any, pharmaceuticals are bad for the environment or harmful to people, drugmakers almost never have to report the release of pharmaceuticals they produce.

"The government could get a national snapshot of the water if they chose to," said Jennifer Sass, a senior scientist for the Natural Resources Defense Council, "and it seems logical that we would want to find out what's coming out of these plants."

Ajit Ghorpade, an environmental engineer who worked for several major pharmaceutical companies before his current job helping run a wastewater treatment plant, said drugmakers have no impetus to take measurements that the government doesn't require.

"Obviously nobody wants to spend the time or their dime to prove this," he said. "It's like asking me why I don't drive a hybrid car? Why should I? It's not required."

After contacting the nation's leading drugmakers and filing public records requests, the AP found two federal agencies that have tested.

Both the EPA and the U.S. Geological Survey have studies under way comparing sewage at treatment plants that receive wastewater from drugmaking factories against sewage at treatment plants that do not.

Preliminary USGS results, slated for publication later this year, show that treated wastewater from sewage plants serving drug factories had significantly more medicine residues. Data from the EPA study show a disproportionate concentration in wastewater of an antibiotic that a major Michigan factory was producing at the time the samples were taken.

Meanwhile, other researchers recorded concentrations of codeine in the southern reaches of the Delaware River that were at least 10 times higher than the rest of the river.

The scientists from the Delaware River Basin Commission won't have to look far when they try to track down potential sources later this year. One mile from the sampling site, just off shore of Pennsville, N.J., there's a pipe that spits out treated wastewater from a municipal plant. The plant accepts sewage from a pharmaceutical factory owned by Siegfried Ltd. The factory makes codeine.

"We have implemented programs to not only reduce the volume of waste materials generated but to minimize the amount of pharmaceutical ingredients in the water," said Siegfried spokeswoman Rita van Eck.

Another codeine plant, run by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Noramco Inc., is about seven miles away. A Noramco spokesman acknowledged that the Wilmington, Del., factory had voluntarily tested its wastewater and found codeine in trace concentrations thousands of times greater than what was found in the Delaware River. "The amounts of codeine we measured in the wastewater, prior to releasing it to the City of Wilmington, are not considered to be hazardous to the environment," said a company spokesman.

In another instance, equipment-cleaning water sent down the drain of an Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc. factory in Denver consistently contains traces of warfarin, a blood thinner, according to results obtained under a public records act request. Officials at the company and the Denver Metro Wastewater Reclamation District said they believe the concentrations are safe.

Warfarin, which also is a common rat poison and pesticide, is so effective at inhibiting growth of aquatic plants and animals it's actually deliberately introduced to clean plants and tiny aquatic animals from ballast water of ships.

"With regard to wastewater management we are subject to a variety of federal, state and local regulation and oversight," said Joel Green, Upsher-Smith's vice president and general counsel. "And we work hard to maintain systems to promote compliance."

Baylor University professor Bryan Brooks, who has published more than a dozen studies related to pharmaceuticals in the environment, said assurances that drugmakers run clean shops are not enough.

"I have no reason to believe them or not believe them," he said. "We don't have peer-reviewed studies to support or not support their claims."

About once per week I get a call from a well meaning MLM "pitchmeister" touting the latest and greatest new product and company that is going to become the hottest thing ever to hit the MLM industry. Invariably this call touts a product that will do everything but grow hair on a billiard ball! Being personally follicley challenged (bald) I have been awaiting, to no avail, for just such a product for over 30 years... and I'm STILL waiting! Of course the dream product is one that you and your MLM company have that absolutely no other company has to offer the world. It is globally patented and backed by a multi-billionaire owner. So, what's the big deal? Just find one of these "dream companies with the dream consumable product" that everyone needs and can't live without... and everyone gets rich! I've never personally found such dream company or product but let me tell you what I HAVE found.

For the past 37 years I have worked with a handful of companies and have built, with the help of some tremendously talented people, some very large business organizations. Three of these companies are still in business. For a variety of reasons I no longer market these company's products. One of the downlines of which I was one of the "sparks" to get started developed into over 1,000,000 distributors and has created multiple billions in sales over the past 18 years. Another downline which I began in 1994 developed into nearly 500,000 associates which have sold or consumed
nearly one billion dollars of products over past 15 years. Approximately one in five of all its sales force and 20% of its annual volume, which today is nearly 400 million, grew out of the 28 people which I originally sponsored. Within the past 4 and 1/2 years I was a partner and business consultant involved with another marketing company that over the past 9 years has sold hundreds of millions in health related consumable products. Two years ago I walked away from this latest highly touted company and
products to sell a small line of non-consumable products. I'd like to offer you some of the reasons why.

First of all I'd like to share some of the little discussed realities of working with and building networks to sell the kinds of consumable lines of products mentioned in my header.

1. Virtually every product in the marketplace offered by MLM companies is not completely proprietary, although in a few cases there may be some patents attached to them. Most can be easily "knocked off" by someone selling a product that is nearly as good or can accomplish the same thing as the one you are offering. This happens almost every day in the real world of marketing. If your product is REALLY "hot" it gets duplicated, usually by someone selling it cheaper than the one you're selling. Just look in almost any health food store and see what they have compared to your

company's products.

2. The typical MLM consumable product sells for $25 to $50 per bottle, jar, package, etc. Most companies require a minimum monthly order to stay "qualified" to receive commissions and bonuses. Generally this amounts to about 100 in BV or PV that may cost you MORE than $100 to stay "qualified." Keeping people (customers OR associates) ordering these products on a consistent basis month after month is nearly impossible. The "half life" of most consumers is less than 3 months... associates and distributors 6 months. You've got to keep recruiting faster than people can quit...
something few people can successfully do.

3. Most of these companies which sell the type of products described above are basically "wholesale buying clubs" with little to no emphasis on RETAIL sales. Because the wholesale/retail price differential is generally about 25-30% and, given the fact that most MLM products are perceived to be "overpriced" to begin with, most distributors sign up their customers as wholesale product users. Show me one national or international sales and marketing company where their sales reps can stay in business selling 98% + of its products WHOLESALE that can can stay in business?
Generally these companies and their sales reps go broke! 90% + of all network marketing (MLM) companies and their rank and file distributors go broke or out of business within the first 12-18 months! It is a nonsustainable business model in a high percentage of cases.

4. Since most products are priced with such a low wholesale/retail price differential the typical earnings per retail customer is minimal...$5 to 10 per item. And since most customers sign up to purchase "wholesale" the profitability per item is far less, generally in the neighborhood of 7-10% on all personally sponsored and "downline" sales. Since the average distributor enrolls 1.8 people you've got to have multiple hundreds or thousands of customers/and or associates to earn any significant money.
Of course we've all heard the "Just get 5 who get 5 who get 5 and you could get rich!" Since there are only one in thousands who can do this over any sustained period of time (by personal observation and downline analysis), you're lucky to receive a check for $30-50 per month.

5. What one continues to see held up are the "poster children" who are the "exceptions" that defied all odds and became big winners in one of the above-described scenarios. The "average" distributor in one of these downlines almost invariably gives up the dream of making lots of money OR goes into a fallback position of consuming your product until something "hotter" comes along.

6. Since only about 2% of the North American population does or has done any kind of MLM program the so-called "heavy hitters" are almost always recycled from other programs which went stale and they now become "pitchmeisters" for the latest greatest "be all end all" deals. They manage to get some of their followers to join them and the process repeats itself over and over again.

So where does all this leave me? Well, I'm currently happily involved with a company out of Reno, Nevada called Ionways,LLC. They market a line of patented and proprietary water machines called "ionizers." The parent manufacturing company (EmcoTech) is the largest and arguably the best manufacturer of this kind of equipment anywhere to be found in the world. Although there are a number of "assemblers" of this type of equipment, there are few actual manufacturers, especially with the research and development capabilities of EmcoTech. They are a 25+year old company with estimated monthly sales of around 50,000 units. All but a few

There are machines that sell for $500 to $5,000 or more that cannot come close to producing the quality of water for the guaranteed 5 year warranty period and/or the estimated life expectancy of the unit (10-20 years). I will gladly

So I'd like to add just a few last words on perhaps THE most important part of this article... what makes selling Ionways water ionizers better than the so-called "consumable health and personal care product lines" mentioned above? Let me list just a few.

Restoring an ALKALINE state in Cancer Patients

Nobel Prize winner Dr. Otto Warburg discovered that cancer cells only thrive in a low-oxygen state. When your body cells and tissue are ACIDIC (below pH of 6.5 - 7.0), they lose their ability to exchange oxygen, and cancer cells are able to thrive.

On the other hand, when your body cells and tissue are ALKALINE (above pH of 7.0) cancer cells find it difficult to survive because of the high amount of oxygen present. Alkaline tissue holds 20 times more oxygen than does acidic tissue and this oxygen rich environment prevents further cancer cell growth. In a pH of 8.0 or greater, cancer cells and cancer-causing pathogenic microbes (viruses, bacteria, fungus) cannot survive.

Maintaining proper body cell and tissue pH is critical for staying healthy and creating an inhospitable environment for cancer cells and virus-bacteria-fungus to multiply. Most people are born into this world with a pH near or at (neutral pH). If you can keep your body tissue pH somewhere between 6.5 - 7.0 it is very difficult to get sick. A near neutral pH (bright blue range) is the goal.

HOW DID MY BODY BECOME ACIDIC?
Nearly all those with cancer have high acidity. There are two main reasons for a high acidic body environment.

The first and most significant is prolonged stress. This causes a depletion of adrenaline in the body’s cells. It is the job of adrenaline to remove / utilize glucose (sugar) from the body’s cells for energy for the body. Depleted adrenaline results in a build up of glucose (sugar) in the body’s cells, and restricts oxygen to cells, causing a break in the krebs cycle of the cell and cell mutation. Pathogenic (harmful) microbes (virus, bacteria, fungus) inhabit cancer cells and feed on this glucose causing fermentation. The body becomes acidic (low pH) due to the waste by-products of these pathogenic microbes fermentating glucose in cancer cells and also fermentation of stress hormones.

The second is poor nutrition / diet. Every food has a pH value from very acidic to very alkaline. Raw fruits and vegetables are very alkaline, while poor foods, beer, soda, coffee, etc are very acidic. This is why those who eat certain types of foods are more or less at risk of certain types of cancers.

HOW CAN I MAKE MY BODY ALKALINE AND KEEP IT THAT WAY?
Step 1 of 3: Re-Alkalising The Body Quickly

A cancer patient always suffers from over-acidification of the tissues. In order to deprive the tumour of a favourable environment, the tissue-pH value must be changed from acid to alkaline. This is easier said than done because all alkaline-forming nutrition loses its intended effect soon after entering the bloodstream, as it is used up in the blood for buffering, before it can reach the tissue. The organism (body) always endeavours via appropriate regulating mechanisms to maintain the blood-pH value at around 7.4, which is absolutely essential for the stability of hormones, in particular adrenaline. A brief recapitulation of the law of reversed proportionality of pH value changes in blood and tissue: if the blood-pH value drops, the tissue-pH value rises (and vice versa). This gives us a kind of lever: it should be possible to indirectly raise an unhealthy acid-tissue-pH value by lowering the slightly alkaline blood-pH value.

Over-acidification of tissue is prevented in a healthy organism (body) by the dextrorotatory lactic acid that is constantly produced by movement and suitable nutrition. This, therefore, indicates that an input of optically dextrorotatory lactic acid is needed. This may seem like a contradiction to the layman, in that tissue is to be de-acidified by administering an acid. The paradox disappears, however, if all interrelations are kept in mind.

Acidification of the blood by means of dextrorotatory lactic acid lowers the blood-pH value until it and the tissue-pH value reach the same level. This takes precisely five weeks in cancer patients who are administered an appropriate dose of dextrorotatory lactic acid (thirty drops, three times daily). This has been confirmed time and again by my own measurements over many years of the blood-pH value.

During the period from the first until approximately the fourth day in week 6, the acid substances will be discharged from the tissue into the blood, the pH value of which drops for a short time to very low values. The excretion of the pathological substances of the tissue via blood, liver, kidneys, and skin during this period is apparent from an entirely pungent and acid smell.

I am as yet unable to explain the reasons for the period of five weeks. However, the same physical and psychological symptoms occur after this (five week period). Feeling generally unwell, the patient is irritable, aggressive, and depressed at the same time. At the height of this “changeover reaction”, usually lasting for three days, the pH value of tissue and blood reach the same level.

The continued supply of dextrorotatory lactic acid finally ensures an unproblematic and physiological restitution and maintenance of a blood-pH value of 7.4 and a tissue –pH value above that figure. This will remove a critical precondition for continued growth of a tumour in a cancer patient, namely the acid environment. Kidneys and liver are now capable of carrying out their full detoxification functions, thereby, laying the foundations for a safe removal of subsequently occurring disintegration products of a malignant tumour.

Finally, dextrorotatory lactic acid also causes the biological neutralization of the toxic, levorotatory lactic acid of the tumour into a non-toxic, racemic form. This is of utmost importance, as it removes the stimulus for an increase in the cell division rate. Normalising the acid-alkali balance also stimulates adrenaline production and improves its effectiveness, an equally important precondition for a healthy (aerobic) metabolism.

The therapy here introduced offers relatively great advantages to patients, because, the “changeover” reaction over three days excepted, they are not subjected to any stress. It is neither painful nor does it cause vomiting, loss of appetite, bleeding of the bladder, or other similar side effects that are well-known from aggressive therapies.

Our bodies are 70 percent water; that's why drinking H2O is so important.

But there are some who say it's not just the water, but the type of water that's so important.

Users say alkaline water is changing their bodies from the inside out; but does it really work?

Pat Darby is just back from chemotherapy. She's in Round 3 in her fight against the cancer diagnosed about four years ago.

Darby's first task when she gets home: getting a glass of water. But this isn't just any water; it's alkaline water, designed to neutralize acids in your body.

"I feel like I should feel like crap, but I don't," she said. "Actually, I feel like I'm about 20 years younger."

With more energy, she says the side effects of cancer are easier to control.

"Everything about me is just alive," Darby said.

Dr. Laura Precourt says it all comes down to your pH level, which reflects the amount of acid in your body.

"It allows the body to heal itself from the inside out," she said.

As we drink sodas and eat junk food, Dr. Precourt sais acidity builds up; some reasearchers believe disease is caused by too much acid in the body.

Alkaline water is supposed to neutralize that.

"A lot of these bottled waters we drink, we think we're drinking healthy water, but some of it is really acidic," Dr. Precourt said.

The difference can be observed by using a dye that tests pH levels.

Red indicates the most acidic beverages, like carbonated soft drinks. Alkaline water is purple, at the other end of the spectrum.

"When you first start drinking the water, you have to go through a detoxification," Dr. Precourt explained. "You're finally getting rid of the toxins."

The concept can be illustrated using tomatoes rinsed in separate bowls — one containing tap water, the other alkaline water.

The alkaline water pulls out a yellowish debris that tap water doesn't get.

Dr. Precourt says the body goes through a similar process, and getting rid of debis makes you healthier. "I have seen cirrhosis go away, excema go away, skin clearing up, constipation be relieved," she said.

After one week of drinking alkaline water, one patient said his diabetes numbers were back in check. A woman said she lost five pounds in the first week and that her swelling and migraines are gone.

While alkaline water has been used in Japenese hospitals for more than 30 years, many experts call it a gimmick.

A study printed in the Journal of the American Medical Association failed to find scientific proof that alkaline water works..Some doctors -- call it "nonsense," saying your body needs no help adjusting its pH level unless you have kidney issues.

But tell that to Pat Darby, whose seen a 180 degree shift in how she looks and feels.

The benefits convinced her to buy a $2,000 alkaline filter that ionizes the water at home. It should last 15 years.

"It's an ionization process," Dr. Precourt explained, showing how the water flows past titanium-platinum plates. She said the water gives people like Darby a second chance to live life at its fullest.

Fighting Back: How to Tell a Cold Where to Go

It is lurking in classrooms, around the corners at hospitals, in the crevices of office buildings, and in the shadows of grocery stores. Plainly put, there is no escape: the common cold is bound to find you wherever you go. When it’s cold season, viruses are on the hunt.

Unlike its cousin, the flu, there is no immunization against the common cold: colds, it turns out, happen. You can work on keeping your immune system in top shape with an alkaline diet, which will help you be less affected. Still, getting a cold doesn’t mean you have to sit in bed for a week, feeling miserable and longing for crazy things, like to be back at work. Colds can be somewhat maintained by heeding the following tips.

Don’t be a Snot:
Ah, the common cold: the one time a year when our entire bodies feel packed with mucus. It kind of comes with the territory: colds attack our noses and our throats. When this happens, it might seem easy to simply sniff or swallow the mucus back into our system. It might seem easy, but it’ll end up hard in the long run. Instead of simply circulating the mucusy surprise, blow your nose or spit. Do it often and do it until your cold is completely gone.

Take it Easy:
It kind of goes without saying, but when you’re under the weather you should also be under the covers, resting as much as you can. Fighting a cold wears on your body: it takes energy and resources. One of the only ways to make up for this depletion is simply to rest. If you find it hard to actually sleep - as colds can make us feel too lousy to snooze soundly - then just lie down. Don’t work out or engage in any other arduous activity until you feel like you’re back to normal.

Use a lift:
Sleeping with a cold is a pain in the head. Our nose is clogged, our throat is sore, and we feel like we can hardly breathe. But, giving your head an extra lift might help. Placing one or two extra pillows under your head can help clear your sinuses. This might seem awkward, as if you are sleeping while sitting up, but you’ll thank yourself in the morning.

Use OTC Medicines:
Unfortunately, there is no magic pill that you can swallow to make your cold just disappear. Colds are smarter than that. However, there are pills you can take to help mask your symptoms and allow you to function or rest more easily. Over the counter medicines can often help clear up your nasal passages and calm aching muscles. Still, it’s important not to take too many medications. Doing so can make you immune to their effectiveness or leave you with an entirely different kind of sickness.

Drink water:
One of the most important things you can do when you have a cold is keep yourself hydrated. You may feel a need to drink tea, juice, or soda, but these will only leave you - and your body - thirsty for more. Drinking water, on the other hand, not only leaves you hydrated but it also helps flush out toxins from your system. Water will also give you an alkaline body, which gives you a better immune system, if you drink IonWays alklaine water. Bottled Water Quality Investigation: 10 Major Brands, 38 Pollutants

The bottled water industry promotes an image of purity, but comprehensive testing by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals a surprising array of chemical contaminants in every bottled water brand analyzed, including toxic byproducts of chlorination in Walmart’s Sam’s Choice and Giant Supermarket's Acadia brands, at levels no different than routinely found in tap water. Several Sam's Choice samples purchased in California exceeded legal limits for bottled water contaminants in that state. Cancer-causing contaminants in bottled water purchased in 5 states (North Carolina, California, Virginia, Delaware and Maryland) and the District of Columbia substantially exceeded the voluntary standards established by the bottled water industry.

Unlike tap water, where consumers are provided with test results every year, the bottled water industry does not disclose the results of any contaminant testing that it conducts. Instead, the industry hides behind the claim that bottled water is held to the same safety standards as tap water. But with promotional campaigns saturated with images of mountain springs, and prices 1,900 times the price of tap water, consumers are clearly led to believe that they are buying a product that has been purified to a level beyond the water that comes out of the garden hose.

To the contrary, our tests strongly indicate that the purity of bottled water cannot be trusted. Given the industry's refusal to make available data to support their claims of superiority, consumer confidence in the purity of bottled water is simply not justified.

Laboratory tests conducted for EWG at one of the country’s leading water quality laboratories found that 10 popular brands of bottled water, purchased from grocery stores and other retailers in 9 states and the District of Columbia, contained 38 chemical pollutants altogether, with an average of 8 contaminants in each brand. More than one-third of the chemicals found are not regulated in bottled water. In the Sam's Choice and Acadia brands levels of some chemicals exceeded legal limits in California as well as industry-sponsored voluntary safety standards. Four brands were also contaminated with bacteria.

Walmart and Giant Brands No Different than Tap Water

pH Levels Test for Health

The 6 pH should be a yellow and the 8 pH a pure blue.

Disclaimer: These pH test results are not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advise or treatment.

It is important to test frequently as food, stress, activity and release of toxins etc. can affect a reading. By testing often you can find out your typical pH reading at that time of day.

Ideally, you are looking at building up your alkaline reserves/ buffers so that you show an alkaline reading for both your urine and saliva pH.

pH is typically higher after eating good food and lower first thing in the morning. To test urine it may be easier to find a small receptical and test first thing in the morning, afternoon and evening. A reasonable pH is between 6.8 pH and 7.4+ pH. As you begin to adopt an alkaline life style you should begin to see changes, but be patient and remember that each .1 pH is a significant difference.

When testing your saliva swallow a couple of times first. It may be easier to use a teaspoon in which to test.

You may notice that your saliva is acid and your urine alkaline or visa-versa. Initially this is common and in time if the right lifestyle is adapted this difference will lessen.

Check Your Results (after getting your average)

1. If your pH is 7 pH to 7.5, then your body fluids are in the healthy range
meaning that, for the moment at least, you have good alkaline buffers in reserve etc.

2. If your pH is between 6.0 and 6.5 you are becoming acidic and therefore developing one or more of the 150 degenerative diseases.

3. If your pH test is below 6.0, then you are highly acidic, very mineral deficient, and have contracted at least one degenerative disease.
